Departments¶
Admin → Users → Departments keeps the organisational tree. A department can have a parent, a manager, and child departments.
Creating a department: the name and the parent decide its place in the tree.
Fields¶
| Field | Rule |
|---|---|
| Department name | Required; unique among its siblings, so two branches can each have a Support department |
| Manager | Optional user; the list marks the manager with a star |
| Parent | Optional; the selector offers — Root — plus the active departments that would not create a cycle |
| Status | Active or Inactive |
The tree¶
- Rows are ordered by name inside each level; clicking a header sorts that level and keeps the children under their parent.
- A department cannot be its own ancestor, and a department under an inactive parent is not offered as a parent for new ones.
- Long names wrap in the list, and the parent selector shows them fully on hover.
Deactivate¶
An active department with active users or active child departments cannot be deactivated: the form reports which of the two blocks it. Empty the department — move its users and its children — and then deactivate.
A department that is already inactive can still be renamed; the same rules apply to its children.
Manager and users¶
The Users column counts the users assigned to the department. Assignment happens from Users, and the manager here is only a label plus the star in the list: it does not grant permissions by itself.
Permissions¶
Managing departments requires the department permissions of your role. See Permission reference.
