Departments¶
Departments are the organizational units inside the company. They form a tree: a department can have a parent, a head, and any number of child departments.
Manage departments¶
- Open Administration → Departments.
- Choose New, or select a department to edit.
- Fill in the fields below.
- Save.
Fields¶
| Field | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Code | Yes | Unique across departments |
| Name | Yes | Shown in lists and in the user form |
| Description | No | Free text |
| Icon | No | Emoji shown next to the name |
| Head | No | The user who leads the department; clearing it is allowed |
| Parent | No | The department above it; empty means it sits at the root |
| Status | Yes | Active or Inactive |
The hierarchy¶
- The parent selector builds a tree. A department cannot be its own ancestor: the selector offers only departments that would not create a cycle.
- The head is a user, not a text field, so a renamed user keeps the reference.
- Two departments can share a name as long as the code differs; the code is what identifies them.
Deactivate or delete¶
- Inactive removes the department from the selection lists. Users assigned to it keep the assignment, and child departments keep their parent.
- Delete clears the assignment on its users and on its child departments instead of deleting them; they become unassigned or move to the root.
Deleting a parent is therefore safe for the tree, but it does not tidy it: review the children first and reparent them explicitly.
